If we turn the clocks back to a decade ago, it would have been hard to imagine that one could send their whereabouts to closed ones and keep them updated all the time. However, thanks to tech giants like Google and Apple, it’s now possible to share your real-time location with anyone you want.

Of course, if you own an iPhone, there are dedicated features like “Find My” and “Send Last Location” to do this task. However, if you are an Android user, Google Maps location sharing is the best way to send your location updates to friends and family members. Although, you can also use Google Maps location sharing on an iOS device as well.

So, today, we are going to explain the step-by-step process to use Google location sharing on your Android/iOS device and send your real-time whereabouts to others.

Part 1: Before you start Google location sharing

Before starting with the process, let’s first discuss the essential guidelines you must adhere to while using the location sharing feature in Google Maps.

  1. You cannot share your location using Google Maps in a country/region that doesn’t allow location sharing.
  2. To use the location sharing feature, you must meet Google’s age requirements. Young children are not allowed to use the location sharing feature. However, their parents can control the location sharing of their device through the Family Link app. The app lets parents control the location settings of their child’s device. It means they have complete control over who can see their child’s current location.
  3. You cannot access the location sharing feature on a G-suite account. It is imperative to have a personal Google account to share your location through Google Maps.
  4. The “location services” must be enabled on your Android device before you use the Google Maps location sharing feature.
  5. The device must be connected to a WiFi or cellular data as Google can only send your location updates when it’s connected to the Internet.

Part 2: Share location by using Google account

In this method, the person with whom you want to share your current location must have a Google account and should be present in your Gmail contact list.

Follow these steps to share location on Android when the other person has a Google account.

Step 1 - Open Google Maps and tap on the “Account Circle” (icon with your name) in the top right corner.
