“I want to send my location to a friend on iMessage, but I can’t find any option for that. Can someone tell me how do you send your location on iMessage?”
If you are new to the iOS ecosystem, then you might be undergoing a similar situation regarding iMessage location sharing. You might already know that iMessage is the inbuilt messaging app on iPhone that helps us communicate with our contacts. Apart from text, we can also share all kinds of media files and even our location using the app. This can help you let your friends know where you are and can also be resourceful during an emergency. In this guide, I will teach you how to send location on iMessage in a step by step manner.
When we go to the location sharing feature on iMessage, we get two options – Share My Current Location and Share My Location. There is a slight difference between these options. Ideally, the Share My Current Location feature would simply send your present coordinates to the other user. The option is majorly used to let the other user know where we are presently.
On the other hand, the Share My Location feature would send your live location to the user. Once you tap on it, you can select the duration for which you wish to share your location. For instance, if you pick one hour, then the other user can check your whereabouts for an hour. The location would automatically be updated and they can just tap on it to track you. It can be used in case of an emergency when you are out and want your friends to track you remotely.
A lot of people find it hard to share iMessage location because they don’t know the requirements for it. Needless to say, your device should be connected to an active network and its location sharing feature should be enabled. Before you learn how to share location on iMessage, make sure you consider the following things in mind.
2.1 Turn WiFi On
To send location on iMessage, your device should be connected to the internet. For that, most of the people connect their devices to an active WiFi connection. You can check that by simply visiting the Control Center on your iPhone and tapping the WiFi feature. Alternatively, you can also go to your device’s Settings > WiFi and turn it on. Here, you can view the available WiFi connections and just connect your device to either of them.
2.2 Enable Cellular Data
If you are not in range of your WiFi connection, then you need to enable the Cellular Data feature. This will let you access the internet even when you are out of your WiFi zone. Though, you should know that it can charge some extra money, depending on your network plan.
You can turn the cellular data on from the Control Center or by visiting its Settings > Cellular Data. Simply toggle on the feature for Cellular Data and further visit its option to ensure data roaming is enabled (if you are out of the home network).
2.3 Turn on the GPS Service
After being connected to an active network, you need to enable the location services on your iPhone. Before you share the iMessage location, just go to your iPhone’s Settings > Privacy > Location Services and make sure the Location Services option is enabled.
2.4 Enable the Location Sharing feature
Turning the location services on is not enough as you need to make sure that the iMessage app should access it. For this, you need to enable the “Share My Location” feature on your iPhone to let you share your location with your family and friends. Just go to your device’s Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Share My Location and toggle on the feature from here.
Now when you have taken care of all the prerequisites, you can easily learn how to send location in iMessage. You can either send your present location or your live location for a specific duration.
