Part 1: Groudon Type and Features

Groudon is one of the Legendary Weather Trio of Pokemon Generation III. It is a Ground-type Pokemon and as it has elite stats it takes Ryhdon’s place as the finest pure ground attacker in the game. In addition, since it has a primal evolution in the future, where it acquires Ground and Fire-type - it gets better with time.

Let’s give a quick look at the official description from Pokemon - “Groudon is said to be the personification of the land itself. Legends tell of its many clashes against Kyogre, as each sought to gain the power of nature.”

According to Bulbepedia, Groudon is a giant, bipedal, dinosaur-like creature that’s covered in red, segmented places of thick skin acting as armor. It features a gray underside and big white spikes running along the sides of its body, head, and tail. It features four claws on both hands, four dozen-like blades on the end of its big tail, and three claws on both feet with gray markings under feet. It even has blue stripes inside the seams of its armor plating which can be witnessed when it is glowing with power.

Moves & Movesets in Pokemon Go

Groudon has following moves in Pokemon Go:

  • Dragon Tail - Dragon - Fast
  • Mud Shot - Ground - Fast
  • Earthquake - Ground - 1 bar, charged
  • Solar Beam - Grass - 1 bar, charged
  • Fire Blast - Fire - 1 bar, charged

Mud shot is better than Dragon Tail, having higher overall damage output, better meta-relevant coverage, and weather compatibility with charge moves. Solar Beam, surprisingly, is the charge move of choice, which offers more meta-relevant coverage and higher neutral damage. Earthquake is more helpful against targets which are either weak to Ground or resist Grass.

As it is ground-type Pokemon, thus making Groudon weak against ice, water, and grass moves. Also, it’s double resistant to Electric and resistant to Poison and Rock.

Shiny Groudon in Pokemon Go

A standard Groudon is red, which features a powerful set of armor on its back. Black stripes which cover its back, legs, and arms. On the other hand, a shiny primal Groudon looks similar, but, its shell is in yellow.

Part 2: How to Catch Groudon in Pokemon Go?

In Pokemon Go, Groudon is a Tier 5 Legendary Raid Boss, with CP of 54411 and players can catch in the below CP ranges:

  • 2260-2351 at Lvl 20, no weather boost
  • 2825-2939 at Lvl 25 with Sunny weather

Groudon can be duo’ ed with complete teams of weather boosted Level 40 Pokemon. And beyond that challenge, it’s recommended to have groups of 3-6 for high-level players or 7-20 for lower level players.

So, one thing is sure that it is vital to team up to take down and catch Groudon. Each trainer or player can use up to 6 Pokemon in Pokemon Go raid battles. Choosing the right creatures to gain the best advantage in these battles is quite important.

As a Ground-type Legendary Pokemon, Groudon is weak only to a handful of attacks. Grass-type, Ice-type, and Water-type will all do super damage against Groudon. But, Groudon has an in-built counterattack against two of these legendary Pokemon.

You may be enticed to load up the team with Sceptile, Articuno, Exeggutor. However, Groudon has 33 percent odds of knowing Fire Blast. And a fire blast attack could wipe out any of those Pokemon in just one hit, meaning it’s a risk to loan up the team with just Ice-type or Grass-type Pokemon. Gyarados is the strongest Water-type attacker in the Pokemon Go. A Gyarados with Hydro Pump and Waterfall cannot only dish out a ton of harm to Groudon. In addition, it is a Water/Flying dual-type Pokemon, meaning it does not have a natural weakness to Grass-type moves or attacks such as Solar Beam. If you don’t have an army of Gyarados, then you can go with the following Pokemon to natty up your attack team - Dragonite, Omastar, Vileplume, Venusaur, Exeggutor, Vaporeon, and Feraligator.

Take Weather into Consideration

When taking on Legendary Pokemon Go Groudon weathered boosted, don’t forget to keep a close eye on the weather. It is at its most dangerous in clear/sunny weather, as its Ground, Grass, and Fire-type attacks get a significant boost because of the weather. It means that its best attack will be boosted irrespective of what charge move it has during the raid.

If you have to fight Groudon during Sunny weather, you must bring some Grass-type Pokemon to advantage from the weather boost. If you’re planning to beat Groudon with any water-type, then your best shot is to wait until it rains. Rainy weather boosts Gyarados’s water-type moves and Groudon does not get any advantage from it.
